Article the (intro)

Definition / Explanation

We use the when the listener or reader can understand which person or thing we mean. It often refers to something specific, known, or already mentioned. For example, after we say I saw a dog, we can later say the dog. This article is common when both people know the context.

Key Rules

  • Use the when the thing is specific: the window, not any window.
  • Use the when the listener already knows what you mean.
  • Use the when a thing is clear from the situation: Close the door.
  • Use the with singular, plural, and some uncountable nouns.
  • Do not use the just because a noun is singular. It must also be specific.

Examples

  • The keys are on the table.
  • I like the blue shirt, not the black one.
  • Please clean the kitchen.
  • The milk is in the fridge.
