A1

Past Simple: be (was/were)

Definition / Explanation

The past simple forms of be are was and were. We use them to talk about people, places, feelings, and situations in the past. This is often one of the first past forms learners study, because it is very common in everyday stories and descriptions. Like present be, it has its own pattern and does not use did in affirmative sentences.

Key Rules

  • Use was with I, he, she, it, and singular nouns.
  • Use were with you, we, they, and plural nouns.
  • Use past time expressions when the time is finished: yesterday, last year, this morning if it is already finished.
  • Negative forms are wasn't and weren't.
  • Questions change the order: Was he late? Were they at home?

Examples

  • I was tired yesterday.
  • She was at work this morning.
  • It was very cold last night.
  • We were at home on Sunday.
  • They were happy after the game.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ I were tired yesterday. -> ✅ I was tired yesterday.
  • ❌ They was at home. -> ✅ They were at home.
  • ❌ She didn't be happy. -> ✅ She wasn't happy.

Tips

  • First learn the two groups: I/he/she/it was and you/we/they were.
