Prepositions of place: in/on/at

Definition / Explanation

Prepositions of place help us say where someone or something is. The most common basic ones are in, on, and at. We often use in for spaces or areas, on for surfaces, and at for points or places seen as one location. These words are small, but they are very important and often difficult because the choice depends on meaning, not only translation.

Key Rules

  • Use in for something inside a space: in the room, in the bag.
  • Use on for something on a surface: on the table, on the wall.
  • Use at for a point or place seen as one location: at home, at school, at the station.
  • Some expressions must be learned as fixed phrases: at home, not in home.
  • Choose the preposition based on the idea: inside, surface, or point/place.

Examples

  • The keys are in my bag.
  • The cup is on the table.
  • She is at school now.
  • There is a picture on the wall.
  • My parents are at home.
  • The children are in the garden.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ The keys are on my bag. -> ✅ The keys are in my bag.
  • ❌ She is in school now. -> ✅ She is at school now.
  • ❌ The phone is at the table. -> ✅ The phone is on the table.

Tips

  • Think in pictures: in = inside, on = touching a surface, at = one place/point.
