Present Simple to be: am/is/are

Definition / Explanation

The verb be is one of the most important verbs in English. In the present simple, it has three forms: am, is, and are. We use be to talk about identity, age, jobs, places, feelings, and other states. It does not work like most other verbs, so learners need to learn its forms separately.

Key Rules

  • Use am with I: I am happy.
  • Use is with he, she, it, and singular nouns: She is a doctor.
  • Use are with you, we, they, and plural nouns: They are ready.
  • With be, the verb comes directly after the subject in statements.
  • You do not use do/does with be in present simple statements.

Examples

  • I am at home.
  • You are my friend.
  • He is from Spain.
  • The room is small.
  • We are tired after work.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ I is late. -> ✅ I am late.
  • ❌ She are a teacher. -> ✅ She is a teacher.
  • ❌ They is in the car. -> ✅ They are in the car.

Tips

  • Learn the three pairs first: I am, he/she/it is, you/we/they are.
