Questions with be

Definition / Explanation

Questions with be are formed in a special way. Instead of adding do or does, we usually move am, is, or are before the subject. This is why we say Are you ready? and Is she at home? Learning this pattern early helps you build many common everyday questions.

Key Rules

  • Use Am I...?, Is he/she/it...?, Are you/we/they...?
  • Put the verb be before the subject in yes/no questions.
  • You do not use do/does with be questions.
  • Short answers are common: Yes, I am. / No, she isn't.
  • Question words can come before be: Where is he?

Examples

  • Are you busy?
