Superlatives (intro)

Definition / Explanation

Superlatives help us talk about the highest or lowest degree in a group. We often use -est with short adjectives and most with longer adjectives. This is how we say that one thing is number one in some way, such as the biggest, the cheapest, or the most interesting. Superlatives are common when we describe places, people, and personal choices.

Key Rules

  • Use the + -est with many short adjectives: the smallest, the oldest.
  • Use the most with many longer adjectives: the most beautiful, the most friendly.
  • We usually use the before a superlative.
  • Use superlatives when you compare one thing with a group: the biggest room in the house.
  • Some adjectives change spelling: big -> biggest, happy -> happiest.

Examples

  • It is the biggest room in the flat.
  • She is the youngest in her family.
  • This is the most comfortable chair here.
  • Today is the hottest day of the week.
  • He is the tallest boy in the class.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ She is the most young in her family. -> ✅ She is the youngest in her family.
  • ❌ This is the more comfortable chair. -> ✅ This is the most comfortable chair.
