Wh‑questions (what/where/when/who/how)

Definition / Explanation

Wh-questions ask for specific information, not just yes or no. They usually begin with words like what, where, when, who, or how. After the question word, we often use be or do/does, depending on the sentence. These questions are essential for everyday communication because they help us ask about people, places, time, and details.

Key Rules

  • Use what for things or information: What is this?
  • Use where for place: Where do you live?
  • Use when for time: When is the class?
  • Use who for people: Who is she?
  • Use how for manner, condition, or age in simple phrases: How are you? How old are you?

Examples

  • What is your name?
  • Where do they work?
  • When does the film start?
  • Who is that man?
  • How do you go to school?
  • How old is your sister?

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Where you live? -> ✅ Where do you live?
  • ❌ Who she is? -> ✅ Who is she?
  • ❌ How many years have you? -> ✅ How old are you?

Tips

  • Question word first, then the question structure: Where do you live? / Where is he?
