Articles: the vs zero in common places/phrases

Definition / Explanation

Sometimes English uses the, and sometimes it uses no article at all. This difference is common in phrases like at school, in bed, go to work, and go to the school. When there is no article, we often mean the normal purpose of the place. When we use the, we often mean the building or a specific place. This is why article choice can change the meaning, not just the grammar.

Key Rules

  • Use zero article for common activities or institutions: at school, in bed, at work, go home.
  • Use the when you mean the building or specific place: the school, the bed, the hospital.
  • Compare: She is at school (she is there as a student) vs The school is new (the building).
  • Use go home, not go to home.
  • Learn the common phrases as chunks.

Examples

  • She is at school.
  • The school is new.
  • He is in bed.
  • I am at work now.
  • We go home at six.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ She is at the school every day. -> ✅ She is at school every day.
  • ❌ We go to home at six. -> ✅ We go home at six.
  • ❌ He is in the bed now. -> ✅ He is in bed now.
