A2

as…as / not as…as

Definition / Explanation

We use as ... as to say that two people or things are equal in some way. We use not as ... as to say they are not equal. The adjective goes in the middle: as tall as, as easy as, not as fast as. This structure is different from comparatives like bigger or more expensive. It is useful when the focus is on equality or difference in the same quality.

Key Rules

  • Form: as + adjective + as.
  • Negative form: not as + adjective + as.
  • Do not use comparative forms like bigger inside this structure.
  • Use it to compare people, things, places, and situations.
  • We often use object pronouns after as in everyday speech: as tall as me, as fast as him.
