Urutan kata dalam phrasal verbs menjadi lebih kompleks ketika object berupa pronoun, noun phrase panjang, atau bagian dari kalimat formal. Pada banyak separable phrasal verbs, noun object bisa diletakkan sebelum atau sesudah particle, tetapi pronoun biasanya diletakkan sebelum particle: put the meeting off / put it off. Ketika object panjang atau berat, bahasa Inggris sering memilih menaruhnya setelah particle agar kalimat seimbang. Pada level lanjut, pilihan urutan kata memengaruhi naturalness dan alur informasi. Aturannya grammar, tetapi pilihan terbaik sering juga bersifat gaya.
Aturan Utama
- Pada separable phrasal verbs, noun objects sering bisa di dua posisi: turn the light off / turn off the light.
- Pronoun objects biasanya di antara verb dan particle: turn it off, bukan turn off it.
- Noun phrase yang panjang/kompleks sering terdengar lebih baik setelah particle: put off the meeting that had been planned for weeks.
- Inseparable phrasal/prepositional verbs tidak dipisah: look after the child, bukan look the child after.
- Pelajari phrasal verbs umum bersama pola object-nya.

- She put the meeting off. - Dia menunda rapat itu.
- She put it off. - Dia menundanya.
- We turned down the offer. - Kami menolak tawaran itu.
- We turned it down immediately. - Kami langsung menolaknya.
- They put off the meeting that had been scheduled for Friday. - Mereka menunda rapat yang dijadwalkan untuk Jumat.
Kesalahan Umum
- ❌ She put off it. -> ✅ She put it off.
- ❌ They looked the children after. -> ✅ They looked after the children.
- ❌ We turned down immediately it. -> ✅ We turned it down immediately.
