Le reported questions trasformano una domanda diretta in una struttura incorporata dentro una proposizione di riporto. L'ordine delle parole diventa quello di un'affermazione, quindi non usiamo l'inversione tipica delle domande dirette. Le yes/no questions usano di solito if o whether, mentre le information questions mantengono la parola interrogativa originale. Il verbo ask è comune in questo schema, ma possono essere usati anche verbi come wonder. La difficoltà principale è cambiare sia l'ordine delle parole sia, quando necessario, il tempo verbale.
Regole chiave
- Usa ask, wonder o un verbo simile per introdurre la reported question.
- Per yes/no questions, usa if o whether.
- Per wh-questions, mantieni la wh-word: where, why, how, ecc.
- Usa statement word order: He asked where I lived, non where did I live.
- Non usare do/does/did nelle reported questions, salvo casi in cui facciano parte del significato originario.

- ❌ He asked where did I live. -> ✅ He asked where I lived.
- ❌ They asked that we could help. -> ✅ They asked whether we could help.
