L'inglese ha vari modi per parlare di azioni ripetute o stati nel passato. Used to è comune per abitudini passate e stati passati che ora non sono più veri. Would può descrivere azioni ripetute nel passato, soprattutto nelle storie, ma normalmente non descrive stati passati. Anche il Past Simple può esprimere abitudini passate quando il contesto rende chiara la ripetizione. Scegliere la forma giusta aiuta a mostrare se intendi una vecchia routine, un vecchio stato o semplicemente una serie di eventi passati.
Regole chiave
- Usa used to + base verb per abitudini e stati passati: I used to live in Leeds.
- Usa would + base verb per azioni passate ripetute, soprattutto in narrazione: Every summer we would camp by the lake.
- Non usare would per stati passati come be, have, know o live in senso generale.
- Anche il Past Simple può indicare abitudine: When I was a child, I played outside every day.
- Used to spesso suggerisce contrasto con il presente.
