Definizione / Spiegazione
Le defining relative clauses danno informazioni essenziali su una persona o una cosa. Dicono esattamente quale intendiamo, quindi senza di loro la frase perderebbe significato importante. A questo livello, le parole principali sono who, which e that, e a volte il pronome si può omettere. Queste proposizioni sono comuni perché permettono di unire due idee più brevi in una frase più chiara. Si chiamano defining perché identificano il nome, non aggiungono solo un dettaglio extra.
Regole chiave
- Usa who per persone: the woman who called.
- Usa which per cose: the car which broke down.
- Usa that per persone o cose in molte frasi quotidiane.
- A volte puoi omettere il pronome relativo quando è oggetto: the book (that) I bought.
- Nelle defining relative clauses non usare virgole.
