関係節に前置詞が入るとき、英語には主に 2 つの型があります。日常会話では前置詞を末尾に置く型（the person I spoke to）が一般的です。よりフォーマルな文体では前置詞を関係代名詞の前に出す型（the person to whom I spoke）が使われます。意味差より文体差が中心です。
主要ルール
- 日常的な型: the person I spoke to, the company she works for。
- フォーマル型: the person to whom I spoke, the company for which she works。
- whom は主にフォーマル書き言葉で前置詞の後に使う。
- that やゼロ関係代名詞の前に前置詞前置はしない。
- 文脈の register で型を選ぶ。
例文
- The colleague I spoke to agreed. - 私が話した同僚は同意しました。
- The colleague to whom I spoke agreed. - 私が話をしたその同僚は同意しました。
- This is the room we met in. - ここが私たちが会った部屋です。
- This is the room in which we met. - こちらが私たちが会った部屋です。
- The topic she is interested in is complex. - 彼女が関心を持っている話題は複雑です。
よくある間違い
- ❌ The colleague to that I spoke agreed. -> ✅ The colleague to whom I spoke agreed.
- ❌ This is the room in that we met. -> ✅ This is the room in which we met. / ✅ This is the room we met in.
- ❌ The topic in she is interested is complex. -> ✅ The topic she is interested in is complex.
