定義 / 解説
reported speech は、元の発話をそのまま引用せずに内容を伝える方法です。報告動詞が過去形の場合、時制を一段過去にずらす backshift が起こることが多いです。ただし、内容が今も真である場合は必ずしも後退させる必要はありません。重要なのは、元の発話時点・報告時点・現在の事実関係を切り分けることです。
主要ルール
- said, told, explained, mentioned などの報告動詞を使う。
- よくある後退: am -> was, have done -> had done, will -> would。
- say と tell の目的語パターンを区別: He said that... / He told me that...
- 代名詞・時間語・場所語も変化しうる。
- 今も真実なら backshift しないこともある。
例文
- He said that he was tired. - 彼は疲れていると言いました。
- She told me that she had left early. - 彼女は私に早く出たと言いました。
- They said they would call later. - 彼らは後で電話すると言いました。
- I told her that the meeting was cancelled. - 私は彼女に会議は中止だと伝えました。
- He said that the earth is round. - 彼は地球は丸いと言いました。
よくある間違い
- ❌ He told that he was tired. -> ✅ He said that he was tired. / ✅ He told me that he was tired.
- ❌ She said me that she had left. -> ✅ She told me that she had left.
- ❌ They said they will call later. -> ✅ They said they would call later.
