定義 / 解説
register は、状況・読み手・目的に合う言語選択を行うことです。 B2 では、縮約形か完全形か、 phrasal verbs か単語動詞か、中立語か学術寄り語かを選び分ける場面が増えます。文法的正しさだけでなく「その場にふさわしいか」が重要です。一貫した register は文章の信頼性を高めます。
主要ルール
- 縮約形（I'm, don't, it's）は会話・インフォーマル文で一般的。
- フォーマル・学術文では完全形が適することが多い。
- phrasal verbs は単語動詞より口語寄りになりやすい。
- フォーマル文では obtain, increase, assist, therefore などが好まれやすい。
- register は一貫性が重要で、極端な混在は避ける。
例文
- It's not possible to finish today. / It is not possible to finish today. - 今日は終わらせるのは無理です。
- We need to find out the cause. / We need to determine the cause. - 原因を突き止める必要があります。
- Can you help me? / Could you assist me? - 手伝ってもらえますか。
- They will put off the meeting. / They will postpone the meeting. - 彼らは会議を延期します。
- The results were unclear; therefore, we repeated the test. - 結果が不明確だったため、私たちは再試験を行いました。
よくある間違い
- ❌ The report says, "We'll sort out the issue soon." -> ✅ The report says, "We will resolve the issue soon."
- ❌ It is a formal essay, but the writer keeps using "can't" and "find out" everywhere. -> ✅ In a formal essay, prefer "cannot" and "determine" where appropriate.
- ❌ The email is very formal, but it also says, "Hey, we're gonna fix it." -> ✅ Keep the register consistent: "We will resolve the issue."
