定義 / 解説
indirect questions は、長い文の中に埋め込まれた疑問で、より丁寧で柔らかい聞き方になります。Can you tell me...?, Do you know...?, I wonder... の後でよく使われます。重要点は、後半が疑問語順ではなく平叙文語順になることです。
主要ルール
- 導入句を置く: Can you tell me... / Do you know... / I wonder...
- 埋め込み節は平叙文語順。
- Where is the station? -> Can you tell me where the station is?
- 不要な do/does/did を埋め込み節で使わない。
- 丁寧な依頼・メールで特に有用。
例文
- Can you tell me where the station is? - 駅がどこにあるか教えていただけますか。
- Do you know what time the shop closes? - その店が何時に閉まるか知っていますか。
- I wonder why he left early. - なぜ彼が早く帰ったのか気になります。
- Could you explain how this machine works? - この機械の使い方を説明していただけますか。
- Do you remember who called last night? - 昨夜誰が電話したか覚えていますか。
よくある間違い
- ❌ Can you tell me where is the station? -> ✅ Can you tell me where the station is?
- ❌ Do you know what does he want? -> ✅ Do you know what he wants?
- ❌ I wonder why did she leave. -> ✅ I wonder why she left.
