定義 / 解説
Past Perfect は、過去の 2 つの出来事のうち「より先に起きた方」を示します。いわゆる earlier past を作る時制です。順序が重要な説明、物語、因果関係でよく使われます。これを使うと、過去の時系列が明確になります。
主要ルール
- 形: had + past participle。
- 2 つの過去行為の「先行側」に使う。
- 後続側は通常 Past Simple 。
- before / after / when / by the time / already とよく共起。
- 順序が文脈で明らかな場合は必須ではない。
例文
- I had left before she arrived. - 彼女が着く前に、私は出発していました。
- They had never seen the sea before they moved there. - そこへ引っ越す前、彼らは海を見たことがありませんでした。
- By the time we got home, the film had started. - 私たちが帰宅した時には、映画は始まっていました。
- He had finished dinner when I called. - 私が電話したとき、彼は夕食を終えていました。
- She had not prepared for the test, so she felt nervous. - 彼女はテスト準備をしていなかったので緊張していました。
よくある間違い
- ❌ I had left before she had arrived. -> ✅ I had left before she arrived.
- ❌ They had saw it before. -> ✅ They had seen it before.
- ❌ By the time we got there, the show started. -> ✅ By the time we got there, the show had started.
ヒント
- 過去の出来事が 2 つあるだけでは Past Perfect は不要です。「先後を明確化したいとき」に使います。
