register とは、状況・関係・目的に合う文法と語彙を選ぶことです。 C1 では、文法自体が register を示すことが多く、縮約、短い節、直接疑問、 phrasal verbs はよりインフォーマルに、完全形、名詞中心表現、特定の節構文はよりフォーマルに響きます。重要なのは意味を変えずに文体を切り替える力です。
主要ルール
- informal では縮約、日常動詞、短めの構文が多い。
- formal では縮約を避け、明示的・抽象的・構造化された表現を使う。
- phrasal verbs は単語動詞より口語寄りなことが多い: put off vs postpone。
- 直接性も register を左右する: Can you send it? vs Could you please send it at your earliest convenience?
- 「高度そう」ではなく、文脈適合で選ぶ。

- It is essential that all data be reviewed. (formal) - すべてのデータを精査することが不可欠です。
- It's really important that we check everything. (neutral) - すべて確認することは本当に重要です。
- We need to sort out the problem. (informal) - その問題を片づける必要があります。
- We need to resolve the issue. (formal) - その問題を解決する必要があります。
- I would be grateful if you could respond by Friday. (formal) - 金曜日までにご返信いただけますと幸いです。
よくある間違い
- ❌ I would be grateful if you can reply soon. -> ✅ I would be grateful if you could reply soon.
- ❌ We need to sort out this matter immediately. (in a very formal report) -> ✅ We need to resolve this matter immediately.
- ❌ It is essential that everyone is present. -> ✅ It is essential that everyone be present. / ✅ It is essential that everyone should be present.
