定義 / 解説
cohesion とは、文どうしを明確で流れるテキストとしてつなぐ力です。重要な手段の一つが reference で、this, that, such, so などで前の内容を受け、無駄な反復を避けます。これらは名詞、節全体、状況全体を指せます。上級では、指示先が常に明確であるよう精密に制御する必要があります。
主要ルール
- this / that で直前の考え・出来事・状況を受ける: This was unexpected.
- such は名詞句の前でタイプや強調を示す: such behaviour, such a response。
- so は do so, say so, think so, so + adjective/adverb などで使う。
- 指示先は必ず明確に。候補が複数あるなら名詞を再提示する。
- フォーマル文では、無目的な反復より明示的 reference が cohesion を高める。
例文
- The plan failed. This was predictable. - その計画は失敗しました。これは予測可能でした。
- He said he'd help, and so he did. - 彼は手伝うと言い、実際にそうしました。
- We had never seen such confusion before. - 私たちはそのような混乱をこれまで見たことがありませんでした。
- The proposal was rejected. That surprised everyone. - 提案は却下されました。そのことは皆を驚かせました。
- They expected delays, and rightly so. - 彼らは遅延を予想しており、それは当然でした。
よくある間違い
- ❌ The company rejected the plan, and this upset it. -> ✅ The company rejected the plan, and this decision upset the team.
- ❌ He said he was tired, and such went home. -> ✅ He said he was tired, and so he went home.
- ❌ We had never seen so confusion before. -> ✅ We had never seen such confusion before.
