Ellipsis と substitution を使うと、上級英語はより簡潔で滑らかになり、繰り返しを減らせます。Ellipsisは文脈から容易に補える語を省略し、substitutionはone、do so、so、neither、助動詞などで重複を置き換えます。 C2 では、これにより情報密度が高くても読みやすい文章・発話を作れます。課題はバランスです。少なすぎると冗長になり、多すぎると意味が追いにくくなります。繰り返しを減らしながら明確さを保つことが上級コントロールです。
主要ルール
- 省略しても文脈で明白な場合はellipsisを使う: Some agreed; others did not.
- 名詞・動詞・節の反復回避にはsubstitutionを使う: the blue one, do so, I think so。
- 参照先がclearであることを必ず確認する。曖昧だと意味がぼやける。
- Ellipsis は特にcoordinated structures、informal questions、responsesでよく使われる。
- Substitution は、反復が重くなりやすいformal writingで特に有効。
例文
- Some supported the plan; others did not. - その計画を支持した人もいれば、支持しなかった人もいました。
- I cannot attend, but she can. - 私は出席できませんが、彼女はできます。
- I will take the smaller one. - 私は小さい方を取ります。
- He said it would work, and I think so. - 彼はそれはうまくいくと言い、私もそう思います。
- If they refuse, we will do so as well. - 彼らが断るなら、私たちもそうします。
よくある間違い
- ❌ I will take the smaller thing. -> ✅ I will take the smaller one.
- ❌ He said it would work, and I think it. -> ✅ He said it would work, and I think so.
- ❌ Some supported the plan; others not. -> ✅ Some supported the plan; others did not.
