Phrasal verbs は英語の自然で強力な要素ですが、上級運用には「使わない方がよい場面」を見極める力も含まれます。会話やインフォーマルな文章では自然で効率的に響くことが多い一方、学術・法務・技術・高度にフォーマルな文脈では、ラテン系の単語動詞の方がより正確・中立・専門的に響く場合があります。問題は phrasal verbs が誤りかどうかではなく、文体上の重みです。 C2 の使用者は選択を意図的に行い、put offが自然な場面とpostponeが適切な場面を見分けます。
主要ルール
- conversation、インフォーマル文、自然な話し言葉では phrasal verbs を積極的に使う。
- よりformal・academic・technicalな文脈では、必要に応じて単語動詞を優先する。
- 比較するのは意味だけでなく、register、precision、tone。
- 多くの場面で中立的な phrasal verbs もあるが、非常に口語的に響くものもある。
- すべての phrasal verbs を機械的に置換しない。受け手と目的で判断する。

- The meeting was postponed until Monday. - 会議は月曜日まで延期されました。

よくある間違い
- ❌ The committee will look into the matter in a highly formal legal summary. -> ✅ The committee will investigate the matter.
- ❌ We had to postpone the trip in very casual speech where a natural tone matters. -> ✅ We had to put off the trip.
- ❌ Replace every phrasal verb with a long formal verb. -> ✅ Choose the form that matches the context and tone.
