C2 での register コントロールは、派手に異なる文法よりも小さな手がかりで決まることが多いです。 contractions 、 passives 、 modal softeners 、 stance phrases 、語彙レベル、文の長さなどが、 informal ・ neutral ・ polite ・ highly formal の印象を作ります。上級者の本質は、誇張や不自然さなく register を切り替えることです。フォーマル文は芝居がかってはいけず、インフォーマル文は雑に聞こえてはいけません。 register とは、受け手・目的・状況に合わせた精密な調整です。
主要ルール
- I'm, it's, don'tのようなcontractionsは informal ・ neutral でより自然。
- 職業的・学術的文脈では、完全形、 passive 、よりフォーマルな stance phrases を多く使う: I regret to inform you。
- 文脈に応じてphrasal verbsとよりフォーマルな単語動詞を使い分ける: put off vs postpone。
- Register は語彙だけでなく、文法選択でも形成される。
- 目標は一貫性。理由なく極端にフォーマルな要素とカジュアルな要素を混在させない。

- I am afraid I cannot attend the meeting. - 申し訳ありませんが、その会議には出席できません。
- I regret to inform you that your application was unsuccessful. - 残念ながら、あなたの申請は不採用となりました。
- We need to sort this out today. - 今日中にこれを整理する必要があります。
- The meeting has been postponed until Monday. - 会議は月曜日まで延期されました。
- It would be appreciated if you replied by noon. - 正午までにご返信いただけますと幸いです。
よくある間違い
- ❌ I regret to tell you the party is off, mate. -> ✅ Keep one register: I regret to inform you ... / ✅ Sorry, the party is off ...
- ❌ The meeting was put off in a very formal report. -> ✅ The meeting was postponed in a formal report.
- ❌ I can't attend and therefore your request shall hereby be declined. -> ✅ Use one level consistently: I cannot attend, so I must decline your request.
