C2 では、 punctuation は単なる機械的規則ではなく、論理、リズム、態度を形作る手段です。semicolonは密接に関連する独立節をつなぎ、colonは説明や結果を導き、dashは中断・対比・劇的焦点を作ります。Scare quotesは語への距離感、皮肉、疑義を示せますが、慎重に使う必要があります。上級の句読点運用は、読み手の解釈を導くための技術です。目的は装飾ではなく、アイデアの接続と文の聞こえ方を精密に制御することです。
主要ルール
- 接続詞なしで近接した独立節を結ぶときはsemicolonを使う。
- 説明、列挙、言い換え、帰結の導入にはcolonを使う。
- 強調、中断、補足コメント、強いリズム転換にはdashを使う。
- Scare quotesは、借用語・疑わしい語・皮肉を示す場合に限定して使う。
- 句読点は休止の長さではなく、meaning relationshipで選ぶ。

よくある間違い
- ❌ It was late, we left. -> ✅ It was late; we left. / ✅ It was late, so we left.
- ❌ She had one goal; to win. -> ✅ She had one goal: to win.
- ❌ Use "quotes" around every important word. -> ✅ Use scare quotes only when you want to signal distance or irony.
