substitution은 반복을 피하기 위해 짧은 대체 형태를 쓰는 cohesion 전략입니다. one/ones, do so, so/neither 등이 대표적입니다.
핵심 규칙
- 가산명사 대체: one / ones
- 동사구 대체(주로 포멀): do so
- think/hope/say/suppose 뒤: so
- 동의 표현: neither / so + auxiliary
- one을 불가산명사나 일반 인칭에 남용하지 않는다.
예문
- I'll take the red one. - 빨간 것으로 할게요.
- The small bags are useful, but the large ones are cheaper. - 작은 가방도 유용하지만 큰 것들이 더 쌉니다.
- He said he would apologise, and he did so the next day. - 그는 사과하겠다고 했고 다음 날 그렇게 했습니다.
- "Will they win?" - "I think so." - "그들이 이길까?" - "그럴 것 같아."
- I don't like crowded places, and neither does my brother. - 저는 붐비는 곳을 싫어하고 제 형도 그렇습니다.
자주 하는 실수
- ❌ I'll take the red it. -> ✅ I'll take the red one.
- ❌ She said she would call, and she did it so. -> ✅ She said she would call, and she did so.
- ❌ I don't smoke, and so doesn't my sister. -> ✅ I don't smoke, and neither does my sister.
