Cohesion คือความเชื่อมต่อของประโยคให้เป็นข้อความที่ไหลลื่น เครื่องมือสำคัญคือ reference โดยใช้คำอย่าง this, that, such, so เพื่อชี้กลับไปยังความคิดก่อนหน้าแทนการพูดซ้ำ คำเหล่านี้อาจอ้างถึงคำนาม clause ทั้งประโยค หรือสถานการณ์ทั้งก้อน ระดับ C1 ต้องคุม reference ให้ชัดว่าแต่ละคำชี้ถึงอะไร ถ้าชี้ไม่ชัด งานเขียนจะคลุมเครือ
กฎสำคัญ
- ใช้ this / that ชี้กลับไปยังความคิด/เหตุการณ์/สถานการณ์ก่อนหน้า: This was unexpected.
- ใช้ such หน้ากลุ่มคำนามเพื่อจัดประเภทหรือเน้น: such behaviour, such a response
- ใช้ so ในรูปแบบอย่าง do so, say so, think so, และ so + adjective/adverb
- ต้องทำให้ referent ชัด ถ้ามีได้หลายความหมายให้ทวนคำนามหรือเขียนใหม่
- ในงานทางการ การชี้อ้างที่ชัดเจนมักช่วย cohesion ได้ดีกว่าการซ้ำตรง ๆ
ตัวอย่าง
- The plan failed. This was predictable. - แผนล้มเหลว เรื่องนี้คาดได้อยู่แล้ว
- He said he'd help, and so he did. - เขาบอกว่าจะช่วย และเขาก็ช่วยจริง
- We had never seen such confusion before. - พวกเราไม่เคยเห็นความสับสนแบบนี้มาก่อน
- The proposal was rejected. That surprised everyone. - ข้อเสนอถูกปฏิเสธ เรื่องนั้นทำให้ทุกคนแปลกใจ
- They expected delays, and rightly so. - พวกเขาคาดว่าจะล่าช้า และก็ถูกต้องแล้ว
ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย
- ❌ The company rejected the plan, and this upset it. -> ✅ The company rejected the plan, and this decision upset the team.
- ❌ He said he was tired, and such went home. -> ✅ He said he was tired, and so he went home.
- ❌ We had never seen so confusion before. -> ✅ We had never seen such confusion before.
