Verb บางคำต้องตามด้วย preposition เฉพาะ เช่น agree with, depend on, belong to คู่แบบนี้เรียกว่า dependent prepositions เพราะ preposition ถูกกำหนดโดย Verb ไม่ได้เลือกอิสระ และมักต้องเรียนเป็นหน่วยเดียว หากเลือก preposition ผิด ประโยคอาจฟังแปลกแม้ Verb ถูกต้อง หัวข้อนี้ยากเพราะ prepositions ภาษาอังกฤษไม่เป็นเหตุผลตรงตัวเสมอ จึงต้องพึ่งการจำและการเจอซ้ำ
