Relative clause'lar sıkça preposition içerir ve İngilizce iki ana kalıp sunar. Gündelik konuşmada preposition genelde sonda kalır: the person I spoke to. Daha resmî İngilizcede preposition relative pronoun'dan önce taşınabilir: the person to whom I spoke. İki kalıp da dilbilgisel olarak doğrudur; ancak farklı register'lara aittir. Öğrenenlerin hem resmî metinleri anlayabilmesi hem konuşmada doğal duyulabilmesi için ikisini de bilmesi gerekir. Seçim çoğu zaman anlamdan çok üslupla ilgilidir.
Temel Kurallar
- Gündelik kalıp: the person I spoke to, the company she works for.
- Resmî kalıp: the person to whom I spoke, the company for which she works.
- Whom, özellikle preposition sonrası resmî yazıda kullanılır.
- that veya sıfır relative pronoun önüne preposition getirmeyin.
- Yapıyı register ve doğallığa göre seçin.

- ❌ The colleague to that I spoke agreed. -> ✅ The colleague to whom I spoke agreed.
- ❌ This is the room in that we met. -> ✅ This is the room in which we met. / ✅ This is the room we met in.
- ❌ The topic in she is interested is complex. -> ✅ The topic she is interested in is complex.
