C1

Formal vs informal register (grammar choices)

Definition / Explanation

Register means choosing grammar and vocabulary that fit the situation, relationship, and purpose. At C1 level, grammar itself often signals register: contractions, shorter clauses, direct questions, and phrasal verbs usually sound more informal, while fuller forms, nominal style, and certain clause patterns often sound more formal. For example, It's really important that... sounds neutral, while It is essential that... sounds more formal and institutional. Good control of register means being able to shift style without changing the core meaning. This is especially important in email, academic writing, presentations, and professional discussion.

Key Rules

  • Informal English often uses contractions, everyday verbs, and shorter patterns.
  • Formal English often avoids contractions and prefers more explicit, abstract, or carefully structured language.
  • Phrasal verbs are often less formal than single-word equivalents: put off vs postpone.
  • Directness also affects register. Compare Can you send it? with Could you please send it at your earliest convenience?
  • Choose a style that matches context, not one that is simply "more advanced."

Examples

  • It is essential that all data be reviewed. (formal)
  • It's really important that we check everything. (neutral)
  • We need to sort out the problem. (informal)
  • We need to resolve the issue. (formal)
  • I would be grateful if you could respond by Friday. (formal)

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ I would be grateful if you can reply soon. -> ✅ I would be grateful if you could reply soon.
  • ❌ We need to sort out this matter immediately. (in a very formal report) -> ✅ We need to resolve this matter immediately.
  • ❌ It is essential that everyone is present. -> ✅ It is essential that everyone be present. / ✅ It is essential that everyone should be present.
